Great Western, Swindon

Carillion is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, ongoing operation and maintenance of the new £135 million 551-bed acute general Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Fully operational since 2002 and now operated on behalf of Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust under a 27-year concession, the 32-acre greenfield site was designed with the needs of patients and staff in mind, providing the highest levels of motivation and quality of care.

We designed a light, bright and environmentally sustainable solution, and delivered it in just 37 months. Local people were employed on-site and we also facilitated a new bus service to the hospital to encourage people to leave their cars at home.

The sustainability initiatives pioneered in Swindon have since formed the basis of numerous Government-supported papers on the issue, and the Great Western Hospital project is established as a benchmark of environmental performance in the construction industry.
